Weekly Sports Recap (Sept 16-22)

As September progresses sports teams at UNB are getting ready for the fall season. This week was busy with pre-season tournaments and the first invitational of the cross country season. Read below for a quick recap of this week’s sports news.

Top 10 at St FX Invitational

The 2019 Atlantic University Sport (AUS) cross country season finally got started this weekend after the Dalhousie/St. Mary’s University invitational was cancelled due to hurricane Dorian.

Hannah Cormier, a third-year student, covered six-kilometres in 22:49:12 to place eighth out of forty-eight for the women.

“There will be bigger races this season, but this sets our women up very well,” said Reds head coach Chris Belof.

Isaac Cull, a third-year student, covered eight-kilometres in 25:43.18 to place fifth for the men. Belof says, “our men executed the race plan well, they ran controlled throughout the race, never outside of themselves”.

The next race on the AUS schedule is the Acadia Invitational in Wolfville, Nova Scotia, on Saturday, October 5th, 2019.

Women’s Field Hockey Win Three-Consecutive Games

The Women’s Field Hockey team is off to an amazing start as they come out of the weekend with three consecutive wins. The women travelled to St. Francis Xavier University in Antigonish to compete in a 2-day tournament from September 21-22.

The Reds were able to secure a 5-1 win against Mount Allison and a 4-1 win against Acadia on Saturday and continued on to defeat the host team themselves—St FX— with a 5-1 win on Sunday. Unfortunately, the women were not able to secure a fourth win against SMU with a final score of 0-1.

Players of the game were awarded to Cassie Doiron and Nathalie LaPlante for their strong performance and teamwork.

STU Showcase Tournament

The St. Thomas University (STU) Men’s volleyball team hosted a pre-season tournament from September 20th to the 22nd at the Richard J. Currie Center. Among teams competing were the defending champions Fanshawe Falcons and UNB Reds.

The Reds defeated Sherbrooke, Fansahwe, and STU to advance to the finals on Sunday, September 22. Again the Men’s Volleyball team was able to secure a 3-0 win (25-17, 25-17, 25-15) over Fansahwe.

This tournament gave an opportunity for UNB to demonstrate their strong presence for the upcoming season.

UQAM Tournament

The Women’s Volleyball team travelled to Montreal this weekend to compete in a tournament at the University of Quebec in Montreal (UQAM). Other schools competing included McGill, Sherbrooke and the University of Ottawa.

The weekend started out rough with 4 out of 5 games resulting in a loss. Luckily the women’s team was able to turn things around and secure a 3-2 win over the University of Ottawa in their last game of the tournament.
