Men’s Atlantic Collegiate Baseball Championships

The Reds men’s baseball team fought their way to a championship title over the Thanksgiving weekend.

The Reds played Saint Mary’s University on Friday, beating them 10-0. The next day, they secured a 5-3 win over Acadia. The Reds’ second game on Saturday, against Holland College (HC), was postponed until Sunday due to rain. 

On Sunday morning, the Reds secured their third victory over HC, procuring a spot in the championship game that afternoon. The final game was played against Acadia and the Reds pulled through with a 3-2 victory. 

A Sunday morning championship breakfast resulted in awards for Jake Cook, All Star Designated Hitter and Home Run Leader; Ryan Van Snick, Defensive Player of the Year; and Mike Washburn, Home Run Leader.

Men’s Hockey Home Opener

On Friday, October 11 the UNB men’s hockey team raised their national championship banner to the Aitken Centre rafters, for the fourth time in five years. After that they defeated the visiting  team, l'Université de Moncton Aigles Bleus, 4-0. 

Goals were scored by Patrick Watling—2nd - 04:06, 3rd - 03:53; and Stephen Anderson—3rd - 05:32, 3rd - 13:26.

The Reds travelled to PEI on Saturday, October 12 to play against UPEI. The Reds beat the Panthers 3-2.

Goals were scored by Tyler Boland—1st - 07:57,3rd - 11:16; and Oliver Cooper—3rd - 08:58. Boland was awarded the Subway Player of the Game.  

The Reds will host the StFX X-Men on Friday at 7:00pm.

Women's Hockey 

October 9th marked the women’s hockey team’s first win (4-3) over l'Université de Moncton's Aigles Bleues in the new era of female Varsity hockey at UNB. Aigles Bleues was the only AUS team the Reds did not defeat last season.

Goals were scored by Myah Bowal—1st - 07:56; Ashley Stratton—1st - 14:44; Tamina Kehler—2nd - 17:43; and Hanna Matchett—2nd - 17:57. Bowal was awarded Subway Player of the Game.

The Reds continued to improve their record to 3-1 on Saturday October 12 against Dalhousie University. The Reds outshot the Tigers 38-17, securing a 4-1 win over DAL.  

Goals were scored by Ashley Stratton—1st - 13:59, 2nd - 16:35; Frederike Cyr—3rd - 00:25; and Jenna MacLean—3rd - 13:50.
