If you are anything like me, you have probably done your fair share of Netflix-binging since the State of Emergency came into effect. You know all about Joe and Carol, and may have fantasized about becoming Bhagavan’s next wife.

Even without a global pandemic, I watch way too many movies for my own good. So I deemed myself the appropriate person to provide some recommendations for the next time you find yourself aimlessly scrolling. This list is a mix of classics, guilty pleasures, and absolute must watches.

  1. Land of the Lost

I know it’s kind of controversial to say that I love Will Ferrel, but I do. This is a perfect tie with Step Brothers to be my favourite movie of his, but the fact that he wears shorts that are a little bit too short for much of this film makes it a must watch for pure entertainment value.

  1. Steel Magnolias

This is a classic, and the perfect choice for when you need to have a good cry. We are all stuck inside, and this provides an adequate excuse for you to sob and blame it on a film. Plus, Sally Fields is an absolute powerhouse, and Dolly Parton’s hair reaches heights that I didn’t know were possible.

  1. Twilight

Just do it. You know you want to. Plus, I can almost guarantee that your preteen self will momentarily possess your body, causing you to quote along with Bella—“I was unconditionally, and irrevocably, in love with him.”

  1. Everest

This is the true story of an expedition gone wrong, with stunning visuals and heartbreaking moments. Watch this if you want to be inspired, but also if you want to shed a few tears. Not as much of a tear jerker as Steel Magnolias, but still emotional.

  1. Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind

Okay, I really wanted to include The Truman Show on this list but it has been taken off Netflix (rude). So I have included this gem because it is my second favourite Jim Carrey movie. This movie is a little hard to get into at first, but the more you watch the more beautiful it is. Watch this when you feel hollow inside. It will make you feel worse but, eventually, better.

  1. Gone With The Wind

I know that this is a classic, and I also know that it is 4 hours long. But, if you watch this only for the moment that Scarlett’s silhouette is backlit by a fiery orange sky, you will have seen one of cinema’s most beautiful scenes. Do yourself a favour, and watch this—it’s one of the best romance movies of all time.

  1. American Ultra

This is such an underrated film. Jesse Eisenberg is such a lovable stoner in this flick and, despite having watched it multiple times, I always enjoy it. A great action movie, and an easy watch for when you have too much on your mind and need a distraction.

  1. Arrival

Amazing. Thought-provoking. Awe-inspiring. Just watch it.

  1. Inglourious Basterds

I had to include at least one Quentin Tarantino film on this list. This is a total riot, and is perfect for watching via the Netflix Party extension with some friends and a good beer.

  1. Seven

This is not for the faint of heart, but it is a fantastic thriller. This movie will take you on an unexpected journey, with some legendary quotable lines, and an insane twist ending.

This list is not comprehensive by any means, but hopefully it inspires you to check out some different films and helps to distract you from reality.
