On October 15, UNB’s President’s Office released an email announcing the passing of Doctor Barbara Ann Fisher-Townsend, who passed on October 11 at the age of 70. Flags have been lowered at UNB Fredericton and UNB Saint John in recognition of her passing.

Fisher-Townsend graduated from UNB in 2006 with a PhD in sociology, and focused her research on domestic violence and religion. Over a period of 28 years, she held a number of positions at the university, including contract academic and contract instructor.

At the time of her passing, Fisher-Townsend was actively teaching courses, it is currently unclear what course of action will be taken to continue the teaching of her students.

In his email, President Paul Mazerolle expressed his condolences for the friends and family of the beloved professor.

“Friends, coworkers and family members will remember Barbara as an exemplary colleague with a teaching style that was lively, innovative and engaging. A beloved and appreciated teacher by all her students and colleagues, she was collegial, proactive and extremely pleasant to work with,” President Mazerolle remarked. “Barbara was always ready with a story, a laugh or a homemade treat, and her pleasing manner was felt by many who worked with her.”

Further, he praised her work ethic, creativity, teaching style, and dedication to her students and colleagues, while reminiscing on her kindness.

Her obituary, found here, revealed that she is survived by her husband, David Townsend, children, grandchildren, and extended family.

Condolences can be made on her obituary page on Flewelling Funeral Home’s website, which can be found here
