Tonight was the Varsity Red’s last night playing the St. Thomas Tommies at the Lady Beaverbrook rink, and in V-Red fashion, they closed their LadyB playing days with a 5-1 victory over the Tommies.
The night started off with a burst of energy on both ends, as UNB and STU fought to secure the first goal of the night.
However, it didn’t start like the last two Battle of the Hill’s did last semester- the Tommies were struggling to keep up with the Reds, who after coming off a losing streak, were fighting hard for this win.
The Varsity Reds were the first to throw some numbers on the board, when Chris Culligan scored on the power-play with an assist from Marc-Antoine Desnoyers and Geordie Wudrick at 13:50 in the first.
The Tommies were unable to capitalize on the Reds goal, as UNB finished the first period with a 1-0 lead.
When the teams came back in the second, they still held the same fire as the first, but it was clear to see that UNB was in favour of the period, and STU was trying hard to gain the momentum they showed back in December.
“We were brutal honestly,” said STU head coach Troy Ryan, “For 40 minutes, and we played scared.”
By 7:48 of the second, UNB had the engines going as Kyle Bailey, with assists from Luke Gallant and Chris Culligan put the second puck into the back of the net for the night, followed by Bretton Stamler at 14:28 with assists from Shayne Wiebe and Nick MacNeil securing the third goal.
“We would get there, and just wouldn’t make the plays. If we can force a team like UNB to be below our goal line and outside the dots, it gives us a chance to play some hockey if we just make that play. And we didn’t make that play,” said Ryan.
The Reds closed the period with a 3-0 lead over their top-of-the-hill rivals.
By the third period the Tommies were showing a little more grit, when Randy Cameron scored the first goal for STU with as assist from Yuri Chermetiev and Chris Morehouse at 7:59.
The two teams continued to battle it out, but STU pushed UNB into a powerplay, and Kyle Bailey scored his second goal of the night, with an assist from Culligan and Gallant, giving the Reds a 4-1 lead.
By the end of the period, the Tommies were unable to come back, and Varsity Red Bretton Stamler, with an assist from Jonathan Harty and Taylor MacDougall, pulled away with a fifth goal, leaving the Tommies with a 5-1 defeat in their last game against the Reds in the Lady Beaverbrook rink.
“Certainly it’s nice to leave here with a win,” said V-Red Kyle Bailey.
