Think about your most precious memory, a time when you were most happy. Now imagine the memory with you eating delicious chocolate cake whilst getting a back massage by the most gorgeous person you’ve ever seen. That my fine friends; is what Red Dead Redemption represents. Comfort and deliciousness.
It would seem the sandbox masters over at Rockstar Games have yet again made a game that is so awesome the only word I could use to describe it would be “shoop.” In-fact this game is so good that I would take it out to dinner sing to it, read it poetry, and brush its hair… I could go on and on really.
The year is 1911, the era of cowboys and westerns are fading into distant memory. We join John Marston as he is being led through town by what looks like government officials to board a train. After a long ride listening to two women who are old enough to be the crypt keeper’s stunt double, we arrive at our destination. We are meant to meet up with an ass-ugly, troll looking fellow whose name, frankly dose not matter. He leads us to a fort were John Marston is to find and kill his old gang member. Long story short he gets shot and is picked up by a farm girl and nursed back to health. From there on he must try and find a way into the fort and kill his old friend, for reasons that are explained in game.
To describe the game play to you I will ask you to imagine Grand Theft Auto, but in the Wild West. While this is the best way to describe the game play, it dose not do Red Dead any justice. The gunfights are simply awesome. Aiming is very easy; all you have to do is point your camera towards the enemy and the crosshair will automatically lock on to your enemy. The player can still do it manually. While this sounds too easy, it will make you feel like a quick drawing cowboy, which is awesome. And just incase you want to be fantastically badass, you could use your Dead-Eye ability to slow down time and line up your shots then let go to watch everyone die in a swift orderly fashion.
Aside from gunfight mechanics, there are a number of mini-games you can choose to play. Some games include: Texas hold ‘em, horseshoes, blackjack, five-finger filet, and the list goes on. In addition to the mini-games and storyline missions, there are a large number of other things you can do such as dueling, robbing a store, hunting, doing challenges, and side jobs. While in the world, there are over 20 random events you might find yourself encountering that can range from helping someone save their loved one from being hung or chasing down a horse thief.
The story is an involving one, which will make you want to play more just to see what will happen. With great writing and well-balanced and believable voice acting, plus the excellent, well textured graphics; there is no doubt that Red Dead Redemption is a game to remember.
There is an online factor to this godly game as well. While playing online, you have levels you must get to. As you level up, you can get better guns, new characters to play as, and new mounts to ride. The online mode is called ‘free roam’. Basically when you get into free roam, you will be transported to an open game lobby, which takes its form as the in-game world in the single player campaign. While roaming the world, you may find certain places that will let you sign up for various games such as capture the flag or a standard death match.
There is no question about whether or not this game is worth the money. Get it ‘cause it may be one of the greatest games that have come out in the past two years.
